Paul Herrera and John Downer offered a two day workshop for TypeCon 2019 at Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis, MN. The first day was devoted to brush writing techniques, understanding and refining the ancient Imperial Roman lettering proportions that are still applicable today. Understanding the brush as a writing tool enables students to incorporate the classic principles in both hand lettering and type design. The second day was devoted to pencil tracings and preparation of drawings from the written images for eventual scanning and digitizing. No scanners were used, however, the exercises were strictly analog. TypeCon is an annual event held by the Society of Typographic Aficionados.
